The Kern County-based 30th Assembly District is one of the few competitive legislative seats in the entire state of California. For that reason, Democratic leaders are particularly miffed that outgoing Rep. Nicole Parra is refusing to endorse the party's likely nominee to succeed her.
It's not so much that Parra doesn't like Fran Florez, the mayor pro tem of Shafter. It's that she can't stand her son, state Sen. Dean Florez. Parra has never forgiven the senator for running one of his staffers against her dad for a seat on the Kern County Board of Supervisors. She also claims that Florez secretly worked to undermine her campaigns in 2002 and 2004, a charge Perata says is ludicrous.
Parra, however, has warmed up to Danny Gilmore, her actual opponent in 2006. The two met for lunch after that campaign and have made nice ever since. "I think he is a good person, very passionate about the Valley," Parra tells the Sacramento Bee.
