Remember Portland Mayor Sam Adams, who became embroiled in an especially damaging sex scandal just days after taking office? Increasingly, it looks as though he will survive.
Adams' opponents have been gathering recall signatures for two months. They have one month left. So, these numbers from the Oregonian aren't especially impressive:
The campaign to recall Mayor Sam Adams now has 34 days and some change to go to collect 50,000 signatures.
The last count, done more than a week ago, shows 10,000, campaign organizer Jasun Wurster said today.
An updated figure on signatures should be ready by the middle of the month, he said. The deadline to submit more than 32,000 valid signatures is Oct. 5. Wurster said the campaign won't submit the signatures -- making the sheets public -- if he doesn't think the recall will qualify.
Update: The recall campaign responds in the comments:
With more than 500 volunteers and over 6,000 petitions (potential for 60,000 signatures) in the field, the Recall of Sam Adams is stronger than ever. We are averaging signing up from 50 to 70 volunteers a week to collect signatures in the remaining 30 days.
It is vital to note that this campaign does not use paid signature collectors. We are all volunteer and the bulk of our signatures will be collected in the last 30 days by volunteers. We also are direct mailing petitions to motivated voters.
