Is "Congress" a Four-Letter Word?
Wow, that was some debate! No, not the presidential debate -- I am, of course, referring to the Indiana gubernatorial debate.
Democrats Jim Schellinger and Jill Long Thompson squared off on Tuesday in advance of their May 6 primary contest. I thought this line of attack from Schellinger was interesting, as reported by the Journal Gazette :
Jim Schellinger, 48, repeatedly told the audience at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne's Rhinehart Recital Hall that he is not a politician and referred to Jill Long Thompson, 55, as "congresswoman" - referencing her six years in office representing northeast Indiana.
In 2006, current and former Republican members of Congress struggled in their gubernatorial bids. The Indiana race will test, at least to a small extent, whether the public's antipathy toward Congress is so great that having served as a federal representative of either party is a liability when running for state office. A recent poll gave Long Thompson a 46%-38% lead.
And, for the record, "Congress" is a seveneight-letter word.
