Schwarzenegger Slips

I have a half-dozen state and local polls piled up that I've been meaning to discuss, so I hereby declare Friday, May 23 to be poll day. First up:

Topic: California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's job approval rating.

Results: 41% approval, 51% disapproval.

Analysis: After a few good years, Schwarzenegger is back in negative territory. He's clearly paying a price for California's budget shortfall and the economic slowdown. Majorities also disapprove of Schwarzenegger's budget proposal and his plan to borrow against future lottery revenue. The Governator has proven to be a resilient politician, so I wouldn't rule out a recovery, although there is no easy answer to the state's budget problems.

About

GOVERNING Politics is the place for news and analysis on campaigns and elections. If there's a ballot measure in California, a legislative election in Alabama, a mayoral election in Anchorage or a governor's race in Rhode Island, GOVERNING Politics probably is writing about it. We love everything about state and local politics, from polls and campaign ads to policy debates and demographic trends.
