California State Treasurer Bill Lockyer was allegedly sent a video recording of his wife having sex with another man in what he believes is a case of blackmail, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Bill Lockyer, 70, is a major political player in California, having previously served as Attorney General and in the legislature. His wife Nadia Lockyer, 40, is a member of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors.
The other man at the center of the scandal is Stephen Chikhani, a construction worker with a history of drug arrests who Nadia Lockyer reportedly met during a rehabilitation stint. Their affair became public after she called police and accused him of assaulting her at a hotel Feb. 3.Chikhani hasn't been charged in connection with the hotel incident.
In January, before that incident, Nadia Lockyer's staff reportedly told the county district attorney that Chikhani was stalking her. The district attorney's office, however, concluded that wasn't the case, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Bill Lockyer, believed the sex tape was a form of black mail and also reported it to the Alameda County District Attorney. Prosecutors, however, determined that the relationship between his wife and Chikhani was consensual
Nadia Lockyer is currently in rehab battling alcoholism and continues to draw her county salary, KGO-TV reports. Meanwhile, Chikhani is currently facing his own drug charges unrelated to the sex scandal.
In 2010, Bill Lockyer received 5.4 million votes -- more than any other elected official in the United States, according to the Huffington Post.
