Mississippi Passes Abortion Bill That Could Shut Only Clinic

JACKSON, Miss. — The Mississippi Senate has given final passage to a bill that could close the state's only abortion clinic.

The bill would require doctors working at abortion clinics to be certified as obstetrician-gynecologists and to have admitting privileges to a local hospital. The clinic's owner told The Associated Press that all of its physicians are OB-GYN's, but only one has admitting privileges. The other two live out of state for safety reasons, which the clinic says has made it difficult for them to secure admitting privileges.

The measure passed the Mississippi House last month. The Senate on Thursday sent it to Gov. Phil Bryant, who has supported past bills that regulate abortion. Bill author Rep. Sam Mims V, R-McComb, says he hopes it will reduce abortions in the state.
