Calif. Medical Marijuana Supporters Advance Statewide Regulations

Medical marijuana advocates are preparing a California ballot question for 2012 that would establish a statewide regulatory system for the budding medicinal pot trade, the Sacramento Bee reports.

The ballot initiative is being the pushed by the same groups that supported Proposition 19 in 2010, which would have legalized marijuana for recreational use, according to the Bee. The movement was prompted by recent federal action to crack down on the state's medical marijuana operations.

The specifics haven't yet been written, but supporters told the Bee that the proposal would likely be modeled after Colorado's regulatory system, which has state-sanctioned inspections and licenses for medical marijuana growers and sellers. Currently, local governments have been left to decide how to enforce the trade.

Advocates hope to build on relative success of the failed Proposition 19, which garnered 47 percent of the vote in 2010, the newspaper reports.
