Thirty employees of Iowa Workforce Development, the state’s employment services agency, are receiving layoff notices this week, a situation state officials blame on federal sequestration budget cuts.

A Democratic lawmaker questions the layoffs, saying Republican Gov. Terry Branstad’s administration could have asked the Iowa Legislature to make up the shortfall of federal money. In addition, a union leader contends that reductions within the workforce agency will make it more difficult for Branstad to achieve his goal of creating 200,000 new jobs statewide.
