The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded its 2011 Sustainable Communities Grants, amounting to nearly $96 million, to 27 communities and organizations and 29 regional areas nationwide this week. Two types of grants were awarded: Community Challenge Grants and Regional Planning Grants.
Community Challenge Grants are given to governments and groups to aid in integrating housing and transportation, according to a department press release. Those efforts could include changing master plans or zoning and building codes to encourage mixed-use developments. Placing affordable housing and businesses near transit stations is another common proposal.
Regional Planning Grants focus on planning efforts that will combine housing, transportation and economic and workforce development with an emphasis on collaborations with partners in areas such as arts and culture and philanthropy.
"Our nation's ability to compete in a global economy and create jobs is dependent upon how quickly and efficiently we can connect our workers and families to education and employment opportunities," HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan said in a statement.
The grants are also matched by local, state and private resources, according to the department. This year, matching and in-kind contributions will total $115 million for the 56 grantees, totaling $211 million in public and private investment.
