Hundreds of witnesses from both sides of the abortion issue tried Monday to sway a Senate committee as a sweeping abortion bill remained on a fast track in the Legislature.

And as a public hearing on the legislation consumed most of the day, anti-abortion and abortion-rights groups staged rallies at the Capitol. The battle over the measure has drawn national attention as the latest front in the war over the divisive social issue.

More than 1,000 abortion opponents rallied Monday night at the Capitol to support the bill that would restrict abortion procedures and facilities.
