The approximate amount that Multnomah County, Ore., is seeking in damages and future costs for climate adaptation from more than a dozen fossil fuel companies over the unprecedented heat dome event in 2021, which trapped hot air over the area for nearly a week, breaking temperature records across the state. There were a total of 72 heat-related deaths in the county in 2021; 69 of them occurred during the heat dome event. In a typical year, there are zero heat-related deaths.
