The proportion of U.S. renters in 2022 who paid more than 30 percent of their income for rent and utilities. Nearly half of those renters were severely cost-burdened, meaning they spent more than 50 percent of their income. Since 2001, median rents have risen by 21 percent while the median annual income for renters has risen by only 2 percent.
