47%

That’s the share of U.S. adults projected to be living with obesity by 2035 if current trends continue, according to a new study published in JAMA. Researchers at the University of Washington analyzed national health and survey data and found obesity rates have already climbed from about 20 percent in 1990 to nearly 43 percent in 2022, with the highest prevalence in the Midwest and South. The study also found wide disparities by race and gender, and comes amid growing demand for weight loss drugs and renewed federal focus on nutrition and diet policy.
