The age of the Yamaki Pine, a bonsai tree known as the Peace Tree. The tree survived the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima. "As I understand, the Yamaki Pine was positioned in the garden near a wall, and that wall protected it just enough that it survived and continues to thrive," said Aaron Stratten, former president of the American Bonsai Society. Japan gave the tree along with 52 others to the U.S. in 1976 in honor of the nation’s bicentennial.
