The drop in homicide rates seen this year in several major U.S. cities — including Buffalo, Denver, Orlando and Seattle — compared to the same period in 2024. Overall, homicides fell 19 percent nationwide across 67 reporting agencies in the first nine months of 2025, with other large declines reported in Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago and Las Vegas. Several cities where President Donald Trump has deployed or threatened to send National Guard troops — such as Washington, D.C.; Memphis; and Portland, Ore. — have seen homicides plummet.
