Increase in the nation’s prison population in 2023, the second consecutive year the number of people incarcerated in state and federal prisons grew, reversing more than a decade of steady decline, according to a new report from the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics. The prison population stood at 1,254,224 on the last day of 2023, still about 20 percent below the 2013 level.
