The proportion of retail milk samples from across the country that tested positive for genetic fragments of the bird flu. Retail milk is still considered to be safe, but the finding suggests the spread of the virus in cows is more extensive than previously known. So far, the USDA has confirmed infections of the virus in 33 herds across eight states.
