That's how much major crime declined across New York City in May, with murders down nearly 21 percent year-to-date at 102, the lowest level ever recorded for the first five months of any year, beating the previous record of 113 set in 2014 and 2017. Even the city's public housing projects are off to their safest start in history, with record lows in murders, shootings and robberies, and subway crime is down more than 6 percent. The Bronx led all five boroughs with an 11 percent year-to-date crime reduction, including a 27 percent drop in auto thefts.
