In an era of big data, the value of government data has gone up, not down.

.

Julia Coronado, an economist who teaches at the University of Texas at Austin, says “Because any company has very detailed information — or a lot of data — on their own customers and products, but they need to benchmark it against something … [the American Community Survey (ACS)]. It’s a public good with a great deal of value for a lot of people in the economy.” Coronado says the ACS provides context for companies’ own data. The ACS from the U.S. Census Bureau helps local officials, community leaders, and businesses understand the changes taking place in their communities. It is the premier source for detailed population and housing information about our nation. (APM Marketplace – September 26, 2019)
