The number of people killed this year in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, across the border from El Paso, Texas. Two Americans were recently killed in gangland-style murders there, and President Felipe Calderón's strategy of sending in the troops to corral drug gangs -- competing for the huge and lucrative U.S. drug market -- appears to have failed. El Paso residents welcomed the pledge this week by President Barack Obama to help solve the fatal shooting of the two Americans.
