The last year Newark, N.J., had a murder-free calendar month -- until last month, March 2010, which also had no homicides to report. The first-quarter homicide total is the second-lowest in Newark since 1941. There were only eight reported shootings in Newark in March, and aggravated assaults, robberies, carjackings and other major crime rates are all down for the first-quarter of 2010 compared to last year.
