$40 million

The amount that Gov. Gavin Newsom wants California to set aside to help cover the cost of abortions for women who don’t qualify for Medicaid and don’t have private health insurance. The money is part of an extra $75 million the state has proposed to spend on abortion, including $15 million for public education campaigns, $1 million for a website that lists abortion services across the state and $1 million for research into “unmet needs.” The state Legislature has until June 15 to pass a budget.
