The temporary annual pay increase that was approved by a U.S. House amendment for federal wildland firefighters through next year, though a Senate bill that would make those pay raises permanent remains stalled. The typical base salary for a year-round entry-level firefighter is only $34,000. There are an estimated 17,000 federal wildland firefighters.
