A concerted effort such as is the focus of this project is needed to attain and maintain equity as well as support small businesses and expand and strengthen the city's economic landscape.

Brenda Rios Brombacher

On: 05-13-2019

This is such a great effort! At HCC's Center for Entrepreneurship, we see the big gap for small businesses in the community, missing opportunities to engage in large procurement contracts (and one of many reasons why we provided NAMC workshops every month), and support businesses through MBDA's workshops. Yet this city has a lot to offer, and we hope Houston gets selected for this City Accelerator cohort!

On: 05-13-2019

I think it is a great idea to break the contracts down to a smaller size and allow small businesses to bid as Primes instead of going in and qualifying as subs only. Have had the opportunity to serve on the OBO (office of business opportunity) board and have seen first hand all the great initiatives that have not only being created but also implemented. This definitely helps the small business to not only succeed but also creates more local employment.

Change, progress, and growth require looking within. Houston, by and through its leader and those who supported the idea of change, growth, and progress, is a city that looked within. They saw a need, and began processes to fulfill that need - inclusivity, an ALL lives matter communities relative to business. This idea and those who supported the idea, have helped many communities become sustainable communities. Let us continue. Go Houston! Vote Houston!

Under Mayor Turner's leadership, Houston has become a Great city for entrepreneurs and startups. The City of Houston's Office of Business Opportunity (OBO) substantially lowers barriers for small business owners to succeed. Other cities should consider following OBO's Director Carlecia Wrights model and vision.

This was a great job at expressing the intent, the cities place in the U.S. Nation, the work performed by City Council, exploring all options to include the use of our diversity such as the minority population and expressing the potential of the City to improve quality of life for individuals as well as businesses. I'm all for it and really see this as an ideal place to both be a small business owner and be a citizen!

Houston is very big on equity. I myself, am a veteran, and an ex-felon, who just finished an Entrepreneurial Program called TurnAround Houston. I think the idea of driving equity through the breakdown of larger contracts is a great idea that will allow healthy competition and better quality of services. This is exactly what Houston needs to bring more people into a better economic situation and open up more markets to those who couldn't before.
