Jay Ruckelshaus is a Rhodes Scholar and a Ph.D. candidate in politics at the University of Oxford. His research concerns the ethical questions at stake in partisan polarization, and his dissertation asks what forms of political community are viable and attractive in increasingly diverse societies. A native of Indianapolis, he is also keenly interested in the economic future of the Midwest. He holds an M.Phil. in political theory from Oxford and a B.A. in political science from Duke University.

Rather than end our 'uncivil war,' our efforts to find a shared American identity have left us more divided than ever. In the search for unity, we should look to a revived focus on local identity.
