In New York, Mayor Mike Bloomberg is entertaining an idea for a huge gondola linking Manhattan and Brooklyn to Governors Island, a largely empty, dormant plot of land in the Hudson River. The price tag for the gondola would be at least $125 million.
What's the potential for large-scale, "funky" transportation ideas like these? Could they be real, viable solutions to cities' transportation problems (as Bradbury suggests the monorail would be)? Or are they sci-fi ideas that won't ever rise above the level of touristy kitsch?
As far as the gondola idea, the word on a couple blogs (Curbed, Bldg Blog) seems to be that the plan is pretty far out there.
