What Vermont's Gubernatorial Candidates Pledge to Do for Women

Republican gubernatorial nominee Phil Scott stuck to his message of making the economy the state's first priority at Thursday's forum on women's issues, while Democratic candidate Sue Minter said her experiences as a working mother gave her insight into what the state's women need.

Republican gubernatorial nominee Phil Scott stuck to his message of making the economy the state's first priority at Thursday's forum on women's issues, while Democratic candidate Sue Minter said her experiences as a working mother gave her insight into what the state's women need.

Both major-party candidates put their personal experiences front and center during Thursday's gubernatorial candidates  forum sponsored by the Vermont Commission on Women.

Minter said she would fight for specific policies to help women gain economic security. Scott said he understood the challenges women face in Vermont as the son of a single mother and the father of daughters, but emphasized his economic plan which he said would help men and women alike.

Minter answered many of the questions by speaking about the times in her life when those issues have affected her personally. She spoke about being afraid to lose her job when she became pregnant with her first child, nursing at work and dealing with the wage gap.
