Blowing Up Bridges?

One Pinellas County, Florida commissioner hopes Hollywood will help in subsidizing a bridge demolition.

If your county needs to demolish a major structure but doesn't have the funds to do so, where can commissioners turn? One Pinellas County, Florida commissioner thinks Hollywood can help. St. Petersburg Times reports that Pinellas County Commissioner John Morroni hopes that a film production will subsidize $13 million to demolish the Friendship Trail Bridge (right) connecting Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. Both counties have budgeted a combined $4 million and need to come up with the additional $9 million. It wouldn't be the first time a Florida entity and Hollywood partnered to blow stuff up: The Times says that in 1991, the team behind "Lethal Weapon 3" paid Orlando $50,000 to film the demolition of its city hall. But a couple of reports quote film commission officials doubting that a production will pay for demolition. (Photo: Mmcknight4, Wikimedia Commons)
