Numbers of military service members vary by state, driven mostly by workforce levels at large bases.
The following are national active-duty military totals for each department, current as of August 2013:
Air Force: 329,104
Army: 529,441
Coast Guard: 40,564
Marine Corps: 195,054
Navy: 319,289
The table below lists military personnel numbers by state. Statistics for active-duty military were provided by the Defense Manpower Data Center and are current as of Aug, 30, 2013. Civilian worker totals were obtained from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, last updated in March.
