John Odum is serving his third term as the elected city clerk of Montpelier, Vt. He comes to the office from a career in electoral politics, which included organizing and IT work for local, state and national campaigns and parties, including the Howard Dean presidential campaign. He holds a Certified Municipal Clerk designation and stays current in the IT world by maintaining his status as a Certified Ethical Hacker and a Certified Network Defense Architect.

In his capacity as clerk, Odum also serves as the city's election administrator and combines this expertise with his cybersecurity background to speak on election security before local and national audiences. His work on this issue and others has appeared on the websites of The Guardian, Huffington Post, Bleeding Cool and numerous regional websites and print publications.

User training and the latest cybersecurity tools are worthwhile, but there is no panacea.
