New Hampshire Raises the Gas Tax

Gov. Maggie Hassan signed a gas tax increase into law Tuesday, and supporters of the 4 cent hike said the money will go to a specific need.

Gov. Maggie Hassan signed a gas tax increase into law Tuesday, and supporters of the 4 cent hike said the money will go to a specific need.

Against the windy Windham backdrop of the Interstate 93 expansion project, Hassan signs into law the first hike in the New Hampshire gas tax in 23 years.

"A modern and solid transportation infrastructure is essential to the success of New Hampshire's people and businesses," Hassan said.

"Even with this increase, New Hampshire still has the lowest fuel charge of any state in New England, and every single dollar raised goes to the construction and maintenance of state and municipal roads and bridges," said bill sponsor Rep. David Campbell, D-Nashua.

The increase will take effect on July 1 and will raise an estimated $30 million annually. The new law increases funding for the state's hundreds of red-listed bridges and crumbling roadways and will pay for the bonding to complete the I-93 expansion.
