Appeals Court Deals Reformers Big Blow in Florida Redistricting Case

A judge has limited access to hundreds of pages of documents from a Republican consulting firm.

Groups seeking to have Florida’s congressional district boundaries thrown out as unconstitutional were dealt a setback Thursday when an appeals court limited access to hundreds of pages of documents from a Republican consulting firm.

The 1st District Court of Appeal said email and other records from Gainesville-based Data Targeting and owner Pat Bainter were “privileged and confidential,” and cannot be used as evidence by the League of Women Voters, Common Cause of Florida and Democratic voters.

Bainter had argued that releasing the more than 500 pages of documents would damage his business and relationship with political clients.

Leon County Circuit Judge Terry Lewis earlier ruled the documents could be used in the case under certain conditions, but the appellate decision reverses that order and shields them completely.
