Republicans Return to Tennessee County Politics After Decades

After skirting around the political potholes of the Davidson County Democratic primary, a few incumbent judges and newcomers will have to get their campaigns in gear again quickly to battle Republican challengers in August.

After skirting around the political potholes of the Davidson County Democratic primary, a few incumbent judges and newcomers will have to get their campaigns in gear again quickly to battle Republican challengers in August.

Tuesday's vote totals showed big support for African-American judicial candidates, who will try to get out the vote with similar success this summer. But Republicans aren't shying away from the fight, as they have in years past; they'll field six candidates in the county general election, marking the first time in nearly two decades that any GOP nominees have appeared on the ballot.

"For the first time in a long time, voters in Davidson County are going to have a choice of Republican candidates," said Brent Leatherwood, the Tennessee Republican Party's executive director.

But Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman Roy Herron said Republicans won't succeed.

"Democrats are going to have an outstanding group of candidates," he said.
