Ohio Pays County's Tab for Ariel Castro's Autopsy

The state of Ohio has reimbursed local officials $1,100 for the cost of Ariel Castro’s autopsy following his jailhouse suicide last fall, according to a letter from the state’s prison director.

The state of Ohio has reimbursed local officials $1,100 for the cost of Ariel Castro’s autopsy following his jailhouse suicide last fall, according to a letter from the state’s prison director.

Pickaway County officials sought the money from the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction after they paid the invoice from the Franklin County Coroner’s office, which conducted Castro’s autopsy.

Castro was sentenced last August to life plus 1,000 years for kidnapping, raping, and imprisoning three women in his Cleveland house for more than a decade. He was found hanging in his cell on Sept. 3 at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, south of Columbus.

In a Dec. 4 letter to the Pickaway County Board of Commissioners, DRC Director Gary Mohr noted that under state law, the cost of an autopsy is usually paid for by the county in which the death occurred.
