North Dakota Voters to Decide Ballot Timing

Measure 1, the only ballot initiative to be decided Tuesday, would move the deadline for submitting ballot measure petitions from 90 days to 120 days prior to an election.

Voters in the Bismarck-Mandan area heading to the polls for Tuesday’s primary election have a single statewide ballot measure to decide and no contested statewide or legislative choices to make.

Polling locations in Burleigh and Morton counties will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Measure 1, the only ballot initiative to be decided Tuesday, is House Concurrent Resolution 3034, passed by the Legislature last year.

It would move the deadline for submitting ballot measure petitions from 90 days to 120 days prior to an election.

It also says challenges to the North Dakota Supreme Court over secretary of state decisions on ballot measure petitions would have to be filed no later than 75 days prior to an election day.

The primary ballot includes the offices of U.S. House, agriculture commissioner, attorney general, tax commissioner, secretary of state and two seats on the Public Service Commission and all odd-numbered legislative districts. Voters must vote along party lines for their party’s candidates in the primary election.

All elected statewide offices in North Dakota are held by Republicans. The party also holds two-thirds majorities in both legislative chambers.
