Next-Generation Nukes May Be Key to Green New Deal

Small modular reactor technology offers a workable and safe energy alternative.

(TNS) - For the production of electricity, the only devices that environmental enthusiasts seem to be able to focus on are windmills and solar panels. Even in the most favorable geographic areas, these alternatives are not able to produce enough power to meet our needs.

For the real “green new deal,” an alternative that nobody mentions is the next generation of nuclear technology called small modular reactors (SMRs). These carbon-free, standardized and factory-produced units are significantly less expensive and safer than the old-fashioned, enormous, custom-built on-site units. They will have the flexibility to be used individually to supplement renewables or they can be connected together to form large units that will satisfy the clean-energy needs for larger geographic areas. And safety is another important factor. The operational safety of these units is so positive that they can be located closer to where the electricity is needed.

If a reasonable portion of the renewable energy money that is given by the government to produce windmills and solar panels was shared for the development and production of small modular reactors, this practical, economical and safe alternative will be up and running soon.
