Gov. Robert Bentley moved a step closer to a second term tonight, easily defeating two little-known challengers to win the Republican nomination for governor, according to the Associated Press.

He moves on to face Democratic nominee Parker Griffith in the Nov. 4 general election.

"I will continue to work hard to try to solve the problems we have in this state and mainly to try to create more jobs," the governor said shortly after AP declared him the winner.

Bentley, a retired dermatologist from Tuscaloosa, held his primary election night reception in the ballroom in the north end zone of Bryant-Denny Stadium.

He was joined during his victory speech by his wife of 48 years, Dianne, his four sons, three daughters-in-law and seven granddaughters.

Tonight contrasted sharply from four years ago, when an underdog Bentley barely made the runoff against Bradley Byrne. Bentley then defeated Byrne and later Democrat Ron Sparks to become Alabama's 53rd governor.
