N.Y. Town Clerk Opposed To Same-Sex Marriage Wins Reelection

A New York town clerk who refuses to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples won reelection.

The town clerk in Ledyard, New York, who has stated she will refuse to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples because of her Christian beliefs won reelection Tuesday, the Associated Press reports.

After New York became the sixth state to approve same-sex marriage earlier this year, Rose Marie Belforti said her religious beliefs prevented her from issuing a marriage license for a same-sex couple, according to the AP. Her solution was to have a deputy town clerk handle all of those licenses.

Belforti earned 305 votes, compared to 186 for her write-in challenger, Ed Easter, who said Belforti's position on same-sex marriage licenses was wrong, according to the news agency.
