According to a HHS press release, the funds are part of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program block grant. The program helps low-income families pay for home energy costs, such as heating their homes in the winter, cooling them in the summer and insulating their homes to make them more energy efficient. Families obtain the financial support through their local or state LIHEAP agency.
"Many needy families face their most challenging moments during the cold months of the year," George Sheldon, acting HHS assistant secretary for children and families said in a statement. "These funds come at a critical time and can help provide those families with the heating assistance they need to stay warm and safe during these upcoming winter months."
