Paul had objected to being given limited time to read the bill, the Los Angeles Times reports. He also filed 74 amendments, more than half of the 144 that the committee is considering, and said he wants to hear more testimony from teachers. He also referenced an oft-ignored Senate rule that prohibits committee meetings from lasting more than two hours while the Senate is in session.
"I'm one of the old-fashioned conservatives who does believe that schools are and should be under local and state control," Paul said during his objection Wednesday, according to the Times. "There are no provisions for the federal government to be involved. Period."
During Thursday's hearing,Senate HELP Chairman Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, announced he and ranking member Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., had reached an agreement to hold another hearing on Nov. 8 before the bill moves to the Senate floor.
