Fla. Legislature Challenges Court Order Blocking Privatization Of Prisons

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, at the behest of the state legislature, will challenge a judge's order blocking the privatization of 30 prisons in the state, the Miami Herald reports.

Bondi filed a notice of appeal in the First District Court of Appeal in Tallahassee on Monday. The appeal will seek to overturn a decision by Circuit Judge Jackie Fulford, who ruled in favor of the union representing correctional officers on Sept. 30. Fulford said the privatization plan would violate the state's constitution because it was attached to the state's prison budget rather than as a separate bill, according to the Herald.

Lawmakers who supported the plan said it would save the state $22 million this year, the newspaper reports.
