Florida Education Association teachers’ union President Andrew Spar, regarding the state’s attempt to supplement the teacher shortage by inviting military veterans, even without teaching experience, to lead classrooms. The new law, which Gov. Ron DeSantis signed on June 9, gives qualifying veterans a five-year teaching certificate and allows them to work as teachers while they earn their bachelor’s degrees; it passed through the state Legislature without any opposing votes.
