The deadline for REAL ID, after the Department of Homeland Security extended the deadline more than two years from its 2023 date. The department said that state motor vehicle departments need to comb through the backlog of applications caused by the pandemic, but COVID-19 is only the latest cause of delay for the implementation effort; the original deadline was more than 14 years ago.
