The number of consecutive days that Phoenix, Ariz., reached 110 degrees Fahrenheit or higher as the region endures an extreme heat wave. The concrete and pavement that surrounds the city only further adds to the heat, slowly releasing heat overnight. The current “low” temperatures aren’t dipping below 90 degrees. The longest recorded stretch of high temperatures so far was 18 days in 1974.
