Alison M. Buttenheim

Alison M. Buttenheim is an associate professor of nursing and health policy at the University of Pennsylvania. She is also associate director of Penn's Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics.

Focusing her research on the use of behavioral economics to increase the uptake of evidence-based health care, Buttenheim has studied California's immunization mandates and vaccine-exemption laws, and is part of an interdisciplinary team analyzing vaccination exemption laws in several states.

Buttenheim worked as a health care management consultant before joining the Penn nursing faculty in 2011. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles, her M.B.A. from Stanford University and her bachelor's degree from Yale University.

Aiming to make them more difficult to get, many states are considering strengthening their laws. There's evidence about what makes for a good one.
