The annual Long Beach Grand Prix takes place this weekend and is expected to add $34 million to the local economy.

The first race through the Southern California city’s streets was held in 1975 and is credited with sparking the town’s transformation. Once a collection of dilapidated and abandoned buildings, Long Beach is now a waterside tourist attraction.

Preparation for the two-mile race begins in February. By this weekend, workers will have installed 14 million pounds of concrete blocks, four miles of fencing, six pedestrian bridges plus grandstands.

In this photo, workers are installing fencing along Shoreline Drive.
