If your e-mail address fits the standard government model -- johndoe@agency.state.us or janedoe@anycity.gov -- you are definitely not an economic development official.

While proofreading the contact information for 2,700 public officials in Governing's annual Sourcebook -- which will be arriving with your July issue -- I couldn't help but notice a new trend: boosterism in the domain names of those in charge of economic development/business recruitment. To wit: choosemaryland.org ; yesvirginia.org ; thinkvermont.com ; cheyenneleads.org ; and the somewhat more conventional bizopp.state.nv.us .

If this approach really works, I may modify my e-mail address along the lines of ajordan@subscribereadrenewandadvertiseingoverning.com . But don't try this out just yet. I want to check with our Webmaster to see about changing the domain name for the whole staff.
