At his death, Guido was the president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. He was also active in the National League of Cities.

Although I visited Dearborn a few months ago, I never followed that city's issues. (You can get a sense of what he accomplished at home in this Detroit Free Press story.) But on the occasions when I dipped into national issues on which he took a lead within the municipal organizations, including homeland security and telecommunications regulation, I found that he generally had the best soundbite, some turn of phrase that encapsulated his position in a quick and revealing way.
