High-occupancy vehicle laws are intended to help cut down on traffic congestion by getting people to carpool. A woman in Arizona, however, tried to beat a ticket for driving alone by saying that her pregnancy meant she was driving for two, according to a story in the Arizona Republic.

The judge begged to differ, dodging a debate over when life begins in the process. He defined "second passenger" as someone who actually occupies a distinct seat in the car. The officer who ticketed the woman said it was the second time someone used that excuse with him. He pointed out that if the court had ruled in the woman's favor, police officers would have to carry pregnancy tests.
