As we
said last week, some county officials are feeling tropical-level heat for attending the National Association of Counties' annual meeting in Hawaii next month. One official in Cook County, IL, has ratcheted up the criticsim a little more: Last Friday, Republican Commissioner Tony Peraica held a
"protest luau" in the county office building in Chicago. Peraica and his assistants handed out leis and pineapple juice, along with fliers questioning why the county board president was going on the trip. (Peraica also conveniently used the opportunity to trumpet his candidacy for the county board presidency, so perhaps some of his shock--SHOCK!--over the Hawaii trip is more about local politics than it seems.)
